Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rococo Revival overmantel mirrors feature elaborate scrolling acanthus leaves, asymmetrical curves, and decorative cresting such as shell or plume motifs. Popularised in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these mirrors drew inspiration from 18th-century French design to create dramatic focal points above fireplaces.

Traditional giltwood mirrors were typically carved from solid timber or crafted using carved timber bases accented with moulded composition detail. The surface was then finished with water gilding or oil gilding using thin layers of gold leaf over a prepared gesso base.

Authentic antique gilded mirrors often exhibit subtle wear to the gold leaf, revealing the reddish or dark bole clay layer beneath, along with natural oxidisation on the mirror glass. Additionally, the backboards usually display aged timber panelling and historical hand-finished framing joints.

A gilded overmantel mirror can be mounted directly above a fireplace, marble console table, or sideboard to serve as an architectural anchor in a living or dining room. Pairing ornate gold framing with minimalist modern walls and contemporary furnishings creates a refined focal contrast.

Dust the ornate frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or dry microfibre brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or liquid polishes that can lift delicate leafing or dissolve gesso. Glass cleaner should be sprayed onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror surface to prevent moisture from seeping behind the gilt edge.
