This George III carved giltwood oval wall mirror dates from the Georgian period in the neoclassical style. The piece comprises a gold giltwood frame with a mirrored glass plate, decorated with an intricate carved flower basket urn cresting at the top, acanthus leaf foliage scrolls, a beaded inner border moulding, and a lower apron with scrolls and a central leaf clasp. It measures 152 cm high by 79 cm wide by 5 cm deep. This grand wall mirror suits placement in a hallway, dining room, or living room above a sideboard or console table to add a touch of period elegance to an interior.

Produced during the reign of King George III (17601820), these mirrors typically feature carved timber frames finished with water gilding, incorporating Neoclassical or Rococo design motifs such as foliage scrolls, urns, and beaded borders.

Frames were sculpted from timber such as pine or lime wood, coated with gesso and gold leaf using a water-gilding technique, and fitted with hand-blown glass plates with silver or mercury backing.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved joinery details on the reverse frame, natural wear on the gold leaf revealing red bole or grey gesso underneath, and historic plate distortion or foxing on the glass.

Positioning the mirror above a modern console table or fireplace mantelpiece reflects light across the room and creates a structural focal point that connects contemporary spaces with classic architecture.

Dust the carved frame gently using a dry feather duster or soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents which can dissolve water-gilded gesso coatings.
