Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rococo Revival mirrors from the 19th century feature elaborate asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaves, shell cresting, and openwork frames. Influenced by 18th-century French design, these frames combine carved timber with moulded gesso to create high-relief sculptural detailing before gilding.

Craftsmen carved a primary wooden frame base, then applied a mixture of chalk and glue called gesso to build detailed ornamentations. Layered clay bole, typically red or yellow, was applied over the gesso before gold leaf was laid and burnished to a high sheen.

Authentic pieces often show hints of the underlying red or yellow clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, known as rub-through. Additional indicators include hand-carved joinery, original wood backing boards, subtle cracking in the gesso surface, and natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass mirror plate.

Positioning an intricate gilt mirror above a clean-lined fireplace mantel or minimalist console table creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary decor. The gilded frame reflects light and introduces texture into neutral colour schemes.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster without applying pressure. Avoid water, liquid polish, or chemical spray cleaners, as moisture can dissolve traditional water gilding and loosen the gesso composition.
