This Georgian rococo wall mirror dates to the eighteenth century and brings classic English country house style to interior spaces. Constructed from giltwood, gesso and glass with a bright gold finish, the rectangular frame displays elaborate carving including cascading acanthus leaves, open C-scrolls, floral blossoms and a prominent pierced top finial with floral urn motifs at the upper corners. The antique mirror plate shows visible foxing and dark spotting from age across its surface, while the intricate wooden framing exhibits traditional gesso build-up and delicate mouldings along the inner and outer borders. Measuring 120 cm high and 69 cm wide, the mirror suits display in a living room, hallway or bedroom, positioned traditionally above a mantelpiece or console table to reflect light and add architectural interest to a wall.

Rococo design in 18th-century England features asymmetrical scrollwork, naturalistic foliage, C-scrolls, and elaborate cresting. Originating in France, the style was adapted by British craftsmen to create sculptural giltwood frames for formal interiors.

These frames were constructed from hand-carved softwoods, such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso plaster. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied using water-gilding techniques, while the mirror plates consisted of mercury-amalgam glass.

Authentic pieces display hand-carving marks on the reverse, original pine backboards, and authentic glass oxidisation. Genuine water-gilded surfaces often reveal red or yellow bole clay undercoating where the gold leaf has worn naturally over time.

Positioning a carved giltwood mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern lines. The reflective surface lightens dark reception spaces and adds architectural depth.

Dust the gilded wood frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, keeping water and chemical cleaners away from the water-soluble gesso. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly dampened cloth without touching the wood frame.
