Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Horizontal pine backboards secured with cut nails: mid to late 19th-century construction.

Incised floral patterning cut into the gilding: typical French Napoleon III framing work.
Old chalk inscription on the reverse: past French transport or workshop marks.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Chateau style wall mirror or pier mirror stands 166 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Constructed from wood and gesso finished in gold leaf, the tall rectangular form has an arched top and retains its original mirror glass with foxing alongside original backboards and four metal wall fixings on the side edges. The heavily decorated giltwood frame displays an intricate central shell cresting flanked by carved foliage, floral motifs, and scrolls at the summit, complemented by a beaded inner border running along the perimeter of the glass. Suitable for placement above a mantel in a living room, a hallway table, or a console table, the piece brings period character to an interior. The gold surface exhibits age-appropriate wear and patination while maintaining a sturdy and solid structure throughout. It integrates well into traditional or eclectic interior schemes as a decorative focal point.

FAQs

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror originally designed to hang on the wall space between two windows. Popularised in 18th and 19th-century interiors, these mirrors were positioned to reflect light back into the room and create an illusion of increased architectural scale.

Antique giltwood mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wooden frame coated with layers of gesso plaster. Pure gold leaf is applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques over a coloured clay base called bole, which imparts tonal warmth to the gilded finish.

Authentic pieces display subtle wear where the underlying clay bole or timber shows through the gilding. Backboards are typically constructed from hand-sawn softwoods exhibiting natural age-related oxidisation, while period mirror glass often shows gentle distressing or foxing.

Positioning a tall giltwood mirror above a mantelpiece or console table maximises natural light and introduces structural height. Classical carved detailing provides a sophisticated contrast when paired alongside modern minimalist furniture or crisp architectural panelling.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or dry soft-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or damp cloths that dissolve historic gesso and gold leaf. Glass should be cleaned carefully by spraying mist onto a microfibre cloth rather than directly onto the mirror surface.
