Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror was originally designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to hang on the wall space, or pier, located between two windows. Its purpose was to reflect natural light into the room and enhance the sense of spatial depth alongside an accompanying pier table.

Victorian giltwood mirrors were typically constructed from softwood frames covered in gesso and carved composition details. Gold leaf was then applied using water or oil gilding techniques over a base of coloured clay bolus.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, red or yellow clay bolus visible beneath areas of worn gold leaf, and natural oxidisation or light distress to the mirror glass.

A giltwood pier mirror is commonly positioned in a hallway, above a sideboard, or hung between windows in a reception room to draw light and create a dramatic vertical focal point within contemporary or traditional schemes.

Gilded surfaces should be cleaned exclusively with a dry, soft camel-hair brush to remove dust. Water and chemical spray cleaners must be avoided, as moisture dissolves the gesso underlay and strips the gold leaf.
