This late nineteenth-century Victorian wall mirror comes from France and dates to circa 1890. The piece takes an arched-top shape within a tall rectangular silhouette, constructed from giltwood and gesso with a reflective glass plate and wooden backboards. The gilded frame carries a bright gold finish and features intricate leaf mouldings along the arched crown and vertical borders, alongside bevelled edges to the glass. Measuring 148 cm in height by 90 cm in width, the mirror is suited for placement above a living room mantelpiece, in a hallway, or as a decorative accent on a bedroom wall to reflect light and expand spatial depth in an interior.

Arched top gilt mirrors became prominent during the Victorian and French Second Empire periods, designed primarily to sit above fireplace mantels or between tall windows to maximize natural light and add height to high-ceilinged reception rooms.

Frames from this era were constructed using a timber core covered in a carved gesso composition, which was then finished with gold leaf applied via water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period mirrors feature solid timber backboards, light surface wear revealing the reddish clay bole underneath the gold leaf, and natural aging or oxidation on the glass plate.

Position the mirror above a living room mantelpiece or a hallway console table to create an anchor point, balance modern minimalist furniture, and reflect ambient lighting throughout the room.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that can dissolve the water-gilded gesso finish.
