Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century French gilt mirror typically features a wooden frame layered with gesso, hand-carved detailing, and gold leaf finish. Signature elements from this era include soft arched corners, pearl or bead mouldings, and subtle red bole clay undercoating visible through aged gilding.

These mirrors were constructed using a solid pine or lime wood frame, coated with a white plaster-like gesso composition. Real gold leaf was applied over a clay base called bole using water gilding, enclosing hand-blown or early silvered plate glass.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit natural age wear where gold leaf has rubbed away to reveal reddish bole underneath. Look for original hand-cut wooden backboards, minor hairline cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, and gentle foxing on the glass surface.

A gilt mirror acts as a focal point when positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or modern sideboard. Combining ornate gilded textures with clean contemporary lines creates a balanced, curated aesthetic across traditional and modern spaces.

Avoid liquid spray cleaners near the gilded frame, as moisture can dissolve traditional water gilding and gesso. Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, and clean the glass using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth.
