Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis Philippe mirrors typically feature soft, rounded upper corners, a straight flat bottom edge, and clean moulded profiles. Originating in France during the mid-nineteenth century, these mirrors prioritize understated elegance with simple gilding rather than heavy baroque carvings.

Traditional gilt mirrors were constructed from carved pine or lime wood frames, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and finished with thin gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques. The mirror glass itself was typically silvered back glass plate.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit subtle signs of wear on the gold leaf finish, revealing red or grey clay bole underneath, along with dark spots or minor oxidisation on the original glass plate. The backboard construction usually consists of rough-sawn pine planks fixed with period-appropriate nails.

Positioning a gilt mirror above a clean-lined modern fireplace or dark wooden sideboard creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary lines. The metallic frame reflects natural light, amplifying perceived room dimensions.

Dust gilt frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that dissolve water-gilded gesso. Clean the mirror glass carefully by spraying cleaner directly onto a microfibre cloth rather than onto the glass edge.
