Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in mid-nineteenth-century France during the reign of King Louis Philippe, these mirrors are defined by their rectangular frames featuring rounded upper corners, straight bottom edges, and minimalist outer profiles often decorated with subtle beaded or floral mouldings.

Frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, covered with a layer of gesso, and hand-gilded using gold leaf applied over a reddish clay base known as bole. The mirror plates were made using mercury-amalgamated glass or early silvered glass.

Authentic pieces usually feature heavy solid timber backboards, evidence of red bole showing through high-wear areas of the gilding, subtle distressing or foxing in the mirror glass, and hand-carved joinery on the rear frame.

These mirrors are frequently placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, positioned over a hall console table, or leaned against a neutral wall to reflect light and soften contemporary architectural lines.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water and liquid polish. Clean the glass with a damp cloth, ensuring no moisture touches the gilded frame perimeter.
