Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Horizontal pine backboards: typical French frame backing of the period.
Light foxing across the mirror plate: oxidisation in old silvering.
Traces of red bole beneath the gilt slip: traditional water gilding on gesso.
Moulded composition ornament over pine core: standard decorative technique of the mid-nineteenth century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

The arched top frame has a carved relief border displaying scrolls and leaves, and holds a centrally positioned floral acanthus crest, complemented by a gilded inner slip border and original glass showing minor foxing. The structure measures 154 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. It retains its original backboards and is fitted with four wall brackets for hanging.

FAQs

Empire pier mirrors typically feature structured rectangular or gently arched forms ornamented with classical motifs such as acanthus leaves, crestings, and gilded accents inspired by Greco-Roman architecture.

Frames were constructed from carved solid timber coated in gesso, finished with water-gilding or oil paint, and fitted with silvered or mercury glass plates.

Genuine antique mirrors feature original timber backing boards, hand-cut glass, natural surface wear or oxidisation on the mirror plate, and subtle distress to the gilding or paint layers.

Position the mirror above a dining room sideboard, over a fireplace mantelpiece, or within a hallway to bounce natural light and create visual depth in contemporary living spaces.

Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding moisture and harsh chemical solvents near gilding or gesso to prevent flaking and surface degradation.
