This large 19th-century French wall mirror follows the Louis XVI Neoclassical style. It comprises a timber frame finished in gold gilding alongside a pale grey painted top panel, enclosing a rectangular mirror plate. The decorative scheme includes a prominent carved urn pediment adorned with floral garlands and laurel leaves, complemented by corner rosettes, a fluted frame, and carved feet at the base. Measuring 181 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, this piece makes a substantial visual impact. Positioned in a contemporary interior, the mirror suits placement above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The gilt surfaces exhibit light rubbing back to the bole, providing visual contrast against the painted areas, while the glass retains its original old mirror plate. The upright format and classical ornamentation allow it to function as a focal point on a vertical wall surface in domestic spaces styled with traditional or period influences.

French Louis XVI style mirrors emerged in the late 18th century, drawing inspiration from classical Greco-Roman antiquity. They are characterised by rectilinear frames, geometric symmetry, and carved motifs such as urns, floral swags, laurel leaves, and rosettes.

Traditional French gilt mirrors were constructed from carved softwoods, such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso and clay bole. Thin leaves of gold were then applied using the water gilding technique, often combined with painted sections and silvered glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors typically display hand-hewn wooden backboards, square-cut nails, and natural oxidation or foxing on the glass silvering. The gilding often reveals reddish or grey clay bole beneath areas of natural rubbing and wear.

Positioning a Neoclassical mirror above a fireplace or a minimalist console table provides a focal point in modern spaces. The gold leaf contrast against neutral or dark matte walls highlights the architectural carving without overwhelming modern decor.

Water-gilded surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre feather duster. Moisture and liquid cleaners must be avoided on gilding, as water can dissolve the underlying gesso glue.
