Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French gilt mirrors typically feature ornate carved frames coated in plaster or gesso and finished with leaf gilded gold. Often designed with curved shoulders, crests featuring floral or rococo motifs, and bead detailing, these mirrors were produced to reflect light in grand reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood frames were constructed using a carved timber core, typically pine or lime wood, layered with chalk-based gesso and clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques to achieve a bright or burnished finish.

Authentic 19th-century gilt mirrors often exhibit red or yellow clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, dark oxidisation spots or slight silvering loss on mercury or early floating-glass backings, and timber backing boards held by hand-forged nails.

Large gilt mirrors are frequently leaned against focal walls or placed above mantels to create depth and light. The contrast between ornate gold detailing and minimal contemporary walls adds visual texture to neutral interiors.

Dust gilt frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial polishes which dissolve water-gesso finishes. Clean the glass with a damp microfiber cloth, taking care not to let moisture seep behind the frame border.
