Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century French gilt mirror typically features a timber frame coated with gesso, adorned with hand-carved decorative relief elements, and finished with gold leaf. These mirrors were commonly designed as pier or overmantel mirrors to maximize natural light reflectance in formal rooms.

These mirrors were constructed using carved solid wood frames layered with plaster-based gesso, which was carved or moulded before gold leaf gilding was applied. The mirrored section consists of hand-cut glass set securely within the decorative border.

Authentic period mirrors frequently display natural age-related craquelure in the gesso surface, reddish clay bole visible beneath worn gold leaf, and hand-fitted timber backing boards secured with historical fixings.

A large gilt mirror can be placed above a fireplace mantelpiece or leaned against a structural wall to create a focal point, reflecting ambient light and enhancing room proportions in contemporary spaces.

Clean the glass surface gently with a damp microfibre cloth, ensuring liquids do not contact the gilded frame. Dust the gesso and gold leaf using a dry, soft bristle brush, avoiding water or chemical polish that could detach fragile gilding.
