This French Provincial wall mirror dates from 1890 and is executed in a warm brown timber. The carved wooden frame adopts a faux bamboo aesthetic, displaying turned nodes along the vertical and horizontal members alongside crossed corner joints that project outward beyond the frame perimeter. The glass plate shows heavy foxing with numerous dark spots and speckles spread across its reflective surface, indicating considerable age and wear. The wooden structure exhibits a rich, deep brown finish with visible grain variations and darker shading around the joints. Measuring 80 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the mirror sits comfortably on a wall in a hallway, bedroom, or living space. It hangs effectively above a sideboard or console table, adding an authentic period touch to both traditional and eclectic interiors. The reflective glass paired with the tactile faux bamboo framing provides a functional decorative element suitable for daily domestic use.

Emerging in late 19th-century France during the Napoleon III period, faux bamboo furniture and mirrors reflected the European fascination with Chinoiserie and Asian artistic influences. Craftsmen carved indigenous woods such as pine or beech to imitate natural bamboo nodes, creating lightweight frames for residential interiors.

These frames were typically crafted from solid turned timber, worked on lathes to replicate bamboo nodes and stained to match natural wood tones. The mirror plates were backed with silver or mercury compounds, which developed characteristic foxing and spotting over extended periods.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery with crossed corner joints, mortise and tenon construction, and natural wear to the stained timber surface. Original mirror glass usually exhibits genuine age-related foxing and desilvered patches.

Position the mirror above a hallway console table, a mantelpiece, or integrated into a gallery wall to introduce textural detail. The botanical motif complements classic English country, botanical, and contemporary eclectic interior schemes.

Dust the turned wooden frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that compromise original varnishes. Clean the mirror plate lightly using a dampened cloth, preventing water from seeping behind the rim.
