Antique Faux Bamboo Wall Mirror, C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming late 19th to early 20th-century wall mirror with a decorative faux bamboo turned wooden frame, finished in a warm rich brown with a lovely aged patina. The rectangular mirror plate is surrounded by slender turned uprights and cross rails, with particularly attractive ring-turned finials extending beyond each corner. The original-style dark metal hanging chain adds to its character. The timber has developed variations in colour, rubbing and small marks through age, giving the mirror an authentic, decorative appearance. A very versatile size for a bathroom, bedroom, hallway or above a small console.

Condition: Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. There are various small knocks, scratches, areas of rubbing and losses to the finish, particularly around the turned joints and finials. The mirror plate has some age-related spotting and marks. The back shows considerable age and wear. Please refer to the photographs for detail.

Date: Circa 1890–1910

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Faux bamboo design gained widespread popularity in Western Europe during the late nineteenth century as part of the Chinoiserie movement. Craftsmen carved or turned native hardwoods to replicate the distinctive nodes and texture of natural bamboo stems, integrating Oriental motifs into traditional domestic furnishings.

These frames were typically crafted from close-grained hardwoods such as beech, maple, or pine. The wood was turned on a lathe to create the notched bamboo profile, then finished with varnish, stain, or paint to simulate natural cane or dark timber.

Authentic period examples often feature turned wooden joinery with lap joints at the corners, original silvered mirror glass with subtle oxidisation, and evidence of hand-finishing on the timber backing board and hanging hardware.

Faux bamboo mirrors add texture and historical interest to contemporary spaces. They work well suspended above sideboards, positioned in narrow hallway alcoves, or integrated into gallery walls alongside botanical prints and rattan accents.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to clean around the carved nodes. Apply a clear beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber finish, avoiding liquid glass cleaners directly on the wood surface.
