This large wall or overmantle mirror originates from around 1900 in the Florentine style. The rectangular piece consists of padauk wood with a warm brown timber colour, holding an original bevel edge mirrored glass plate. The wide wooden frame displays deep openwork scrollwork, pierced timber borders, and dense acanthus leaf carving in high relief. The frame shows minor historic knocks, marks, wear, imperfections, losses, and repairs, while the glass exhibits light to medium oxidation and age-related surface imperfections. The overall dimensions measure 112 cm high by 92 cm wide by 10 cm deep. Suitable for hanging in either portrait or landscape orientation, the mirror functions well above a mantelpiece or as a statement wall hanging in an English Country House setting. The piece sits securely on a wall to reflect interior light and space within a living room, hallway, or dining area.

FAQs

Florentine style mirrors are recognised by their intricate openwork frame carving, often featuring stylized scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and fluid foliage patterns influenced by Italian Renaissance design.

Carved mirrors from circa 1900 were constructed using dense hardwoods such as padauk, walnut, or mahogany, paired with silvered glass plates and traditional hand-cut joinery.

Authentic period frames exhibit hand-carving tool marks on the reverse, natural age-related timber contraction, traditional lap or mitered corner joinery, and non-uniform oxidation on the mirror plate.

A carved Florentine mirror can be hung above a fireplace mantelpiece or a contemporary console table to provide architectural texture, visual contrast, and spatial depth.

Clean carved timber frames using a soft, dry bristle brush to clear dust from recessed details, and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood moisture without obscuring delicate carving.
