Florentine giltwood mirrors originated in Florence, Italy, during the Renaissance and evolved through the Baroque and Rococo periods of the 18th century. Master woodcarvers created intricate openwork frames inspired by organic forms, leaves, and scrolls, which were then gilded to reflect candlelight and display wealth in aristocratic residences.

Traditional giltwood frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, then coated with multiple layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and animal glue. A layer of bole (coloured clay) was applied before gold leaf was delicately applied using water gilding techniques and burnished with an agate stone.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved irregularities, hand-hewn backing boards, and evidence of water gilding where the red or grey clay bole peeks through areas of natural surface wear.
