This large Victorian overmantel mirror dates from the nineteenth century and is constructed from oak with a gold gilt finish, incorporating an original glass plate and backboards. The rectangular form features a heavy architectural pediment with acanthus leaf scrollwork, classical figural caryatid busts flanking the sides, and a male lion bust crest at the top centre, complemented by detailed foliate garlands carved down the vertical side pillars. The dimensions measure 175 cm high, 173 cm wide at the bottom widest point, and 10 cm deep. Designed originally for domestic interiors, the piece serves well as a floor-standing mirror in a hallway or bedroom, or positioned above a large fireplace mantel in a reception room to reflect natural light.

An overmantel mirror is a wide, decorative mirror designed specifically to hang or sit above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were intended to capture light from nearby chandeliers and candles, amplifying illumination while serving as a central focal point in a room.

In the 19th century, frames were typically crafted from solid woods such as oak, pine, or lime, which were carved or adorned with detailed composition mouldings (compo). A layer of gesso was applied to smooth the surface before thin sheets of gold leaf were oil-gilded or water-gilded onto the frame, followed by heavy plate glass mirrors.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural age-related wear, such as subtle cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, gentle rubbing away of the gold leaf showing red or grey clay bolus underneath, and minor foxing or dark spots on the mirror glass. The back of the frame usually features rough-sawn timber planks fastened with aged iron nails.

A large gilded mirror provides visual contrast when placed against contemporary paint schemes or minimalist architectural backdrop. Resting the piece above a fireplace, console table, or directly on the floor brings structure and reflects natural light, making smaller or darker spaces feel expanded.

Gilded finishes are delicate and soluble in water; light dusting with a dry, soft-bristled artist brush or microfiber cloth is recommended. Avoid liquid cleaners, polish, or water on the frame, and clean the glass glass surface carefully by spraying cleaner onto a cloth rather than directly on the mirror.
