Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe (18301848), these mirrors are defined by rounded upper corners, straight bottom edges, and simple gilded frames, often adorned with subtle etched patterns or beaded inner rims.

These mirrors were typically constructed from pine or oak timber backings topped with moulded gesso, layered with red bole, and finished with hand-applied gold leaf. The reflective panels were made using silvered or mercurial glass, which produced subtle depth and natural oxidisation over time.

Authentic 19th-century examples display characteristic features such as a original timber backboard, slight foxing or dark specks on the mirror glass, red bole showing through worn gold leaf, and rounded top corners without heavy corner crests.

A Louis Philippe mirror functions well resting on a fireplace mantelpiece, positioned above a dining room sideboard, or mounted as a focal point in an entryway to reflect light and add warmth to contemporary spaces.

Frame surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Liquid cleaners, polish, or wet cloths should never be used on gilded gesso, with damp wiping restricted strictly to the glass panel.
