Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Red bole showing through rubbed gilding: traditional water gilding over gesso.
Deeply carved timber acanthus cresting: nineteenth-century decorative work.
Clouding and dark speckles in the plate: natural oxidisation of old mirror silvering.
Rough-sawn pine framing on the reverse: hand-worked secondary timbers.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Chateau style overmantel mirror comes in a gold giltwood finish with original mercury glass featuring a few marks. The rectangular frame has a flat base, a carved acanthus leaf cresting with C-scrolls, a decorative beaded inner frame, and carved details on the top, sides, and bottom. Signs of age and wear include old repairs to the cartouche, general rubbing to the gilded finish, and some gesso and gilding missing at the bottom right-hand base. Measuring width 147 cm by height 120 cm, the mirror is designed for placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or bedroom.

FAQs

Overmantel mirrors became prominent architectural features in European homes during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, positioned above chimney pieces to maximise natural light and reflect candlelight throughout formal receiving rooms.

Frames were typically constructed from hand-carved pine or lime wood, coated with gesso composition, and finished with thin gold leaf applied using water gilding techniques over a coloured clay base called bole.

Authentic period pieces display gentle wear on high points where the reddish-brown bole underlayer shows through the gold leaf, alongside natural wood shrinkage, original pine backboards, and slight oxidisation on the mirrored glass.

An overmantel mirror can be placed above a fireplace hearth or styled atop a contemporary console table, creating visual contrast between classical carved detailing and modern minimalist furnishings.

Giltwood frames require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which dissolve the water-soluble gesso layers beneath the gilding.
