This pair of nineteenth century French Chateau armchairs stands on short black turned wooden legs and features deep-buttoned cream calico upholstery. Both low-profile seats have flared scroll arms and tall curved backs, with one seat retaining a striped blue and white cotton cover while the other shows plain calico. The timber frame displays visible wear along the edges of the fabric and exposed tacking. Each chair measures 91 cm high, 84 cm wide and 84 cm deep, with a seat depth of 56 cm. Suitable for placement in a living room, study or bedroom, these seating pieces offer versatility as they can also be reupholstered with a plain back without buttons if preferred.

Originating in 19th-century France during the Napoleon III era, the crapaud chair is a low-slung, fully upholstered armchair characteristically featuring deep buttoning, short legs, and an enclosed, rounded form designed for comfortable seating.

Traditional 19th-century French upholstered chairs feature solid hardwood frames, hand-tied steel coil springs, jute webbing, hair or fibre stuffing, and hand-tufted buttoning supported on turned timber legs.

Authentic era pieces typically feature hand-carved hardwood frames beneath the upholstery, hand-tacked webbing along the frame underside, traditional hand-tied springs, and original turned legs showing natural wear.

A pair of antique French armchairs can be placed opposite a contemporary sofa to create symmetry, positioned in a bedroom corner, or recovered in neutral linen to blend classic silhouettes with modern decor.

Keep natural fabric upholstery away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, vacuum gently using a soft brush attachment, and consult a professional upholstery conservator for any frame or textile repairs.
