This mid-19th century French bedroom chair dates from 1860 and follows a French Chateau design. The piece uses wood, fabric, and metal materials in a rose pink colour scheme with a pattern of botanical motifs. The structure includes an arched back, scrolled armrests, deep button tufting, turned front legs, and brass castors. Visible details include a powder pink cotton damask cover, a brocade edge, and twisted rope trim in pink, white and blue around the arms and back, alongside solid walnut supports and a small missing piece of wood on one back leg. Practical dimensions measure 92 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 54 cm deep. The chair is placed in a home today as an armchair in a bedroom or living space for comfortable seating.

During the mid-19th century in France, low-profile upholstered chairs, including the classic crapaud design, became popular for boudoirs and private chambers. These chairs were crafted with deep buttoning and padded arms to provide comfortable seating while maintaining a compact footprint suitable for dressing areas.

Frames were typically constructed from hardwoods such as beech or walnut, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Cushioning relied on coil springs, hand-tied webbed supports, and natural fillings like horsehair, topped with damask, velvet, or brocade fabrics.

Authentic period chairs feature hand-turned wooden legs, original brass or iron castors, and hand-stitched deep button tufting. Examining the underside often reveals traditional webbing, hand-lashed springs, and evidence of hand-hewn frame construction.

A low-slung French armchair functions as a focal accent piece when placed in a corner of a master bedroom, dressing room, or large bathroom. Combining structured period textiles with contemporary minimalist surroundings highlights the silhouette and texture of the chair.

Regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment prevents dust accumulation within deep buttoning. Timber legs should be treated with natural beeswax, and the chair should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent textile colour fading.
