This 19th Century pair of French chairs features a rounded upholstered backrest, scrolled arms, and turned dark wood legs fitted with small metal castors. The seating is finished in a plain pale beige fabric, edged with small dark upholstery tacks along the lower base, and has signs of wear to the upholstery. Measuring 91 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 84 cm deep, these low-slung armchairs offer a comfortable lounging option. Placed in a living room, a bedroom, or a study, these chairs suit a traditional seating arrangement. They work well paired together opposite a fireplace, or positioned individually in a corner alongside a reading lamp. Their muted neutral tone allows them to integrate easily into various interior colour schemes while retaining a distinct antique character.

A crapaud chair is a mid-to-late 19th-century French upholstered armchair defined by a low seat, curved backrest, and fully padded arms. The design emerged prominently during the Napoleon III era and was named after its squat, toad-like profile.

These armchairs were built around a solid hardwood frame, typically beech or walnut, using mortise and tenon joinery. Traditional upholstery involved hand-tied steel coil springs, jute webbing, animal hair or fibre padding, and turned wooden legs fitted with brass castors.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned wooden legs with original metal castors, hand-tacked calico or hessian under-upholstery, and heavy timber frames showing hand-saw marks underneath. The proportions generally favour a lower seat height compared to 20th-century reproductions.

A matching pair works effectively placed opposite a contemporary sofa or flanking a fireplace to establish symmetry. Leaving the chairs in neutral calico or re-upholstering in modern linen creates a subtle contrast between historical structure and modern surface texture.

Vacuum fabric gently using a soft brush attachment and treat spills immediately with dry upholstery cleaning methods. Wipe ebonised wooden legs with a dry lint-free cloth and apply clear microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the dark finish without damaging brass castors.
