Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th Century pair of antique French chairs is upholstered in pale cream fabric with visible staining and wear across the backrests and arms. The armchairs stand on turned black wooden legs with small brass studs trim along the lower edge of the seats, featuring rolled upholstered arms and high rectangular backs. Each chair measures 94 cm high, 79 cm wide, and 81 cm deep. Suitable for use in a living room, study, or bedroom, these seating pieces provide traditional character for daily relaxation or reading. They work well paired together opposite a fireplace or placed separately as statement accent seating within a period or transitional interior scheme.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century French armchairs are recognised by their padded frames, low-slung seating profiles, rolled armrests, and turned timber legs. Designs from this era prioritised comfort and subtle decorative woodwork.

Frames were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech or oak. Upholstery layers comprised hessian, coiled steel springs, natural horsehair padding, and calico cotton undercloth.

Authentic pieces display hand-turned timber legs, traditional dowel frame joinery, natural stuffing materials rather than synthetic foam, and visible evidence of hand-tacked webbing along the underside.

A pair of neutral upholstered armchairs can be positioned opposite a modern sofa or arranged in a reading nook to provide balance, contrasting clean contemporary architecture with classic curved silhouettes.

Clean upholstery using a soft brush vacuum attachment, avoid placing textiles in direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation, and consult professional conservators for structural repairs or re-upholstery.
