Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival overmantel mirrors typically feature architectural elements such as pointed arches, tracery motifs, and vertical pilasters influenced by medieval ecclesiastical design. Popularised during the 19th century, these mirrors were specifically proportioned to sit above drawing room mantelpieces to reflect light and expand spatial perception.

These frames were constructed using timber foundations such as pine or oak, layered with gesso made from chalk and binder. Hand-carved decorative details were applied before layering thin sheets of gold leaf over a clay bole base.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of traditional water gilding, often displaying subtle wear where the underlying clay bole shows through the gold leaf. The reverse usually features hand-sawn timber backing boards, and original mirror plates may show minor silvering oxidation.

Mounting a structured arched mirror above a simple marble fireplace or contemporary console table creates a focal point with strong architectural lines. Pairing gilded finishes with neutral walls allows the geometric silhouette and detailed relief work to anchor the room.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft camel hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaners which can dissolve gesso and strip gold leaf. Glass should be cleaned by applying cleaner directly to a cloth rather than spraying the mirror surface.
