This mid-Victorian over-mantle mirror dates from around 1860 and follows a classic English Country House style. The frame is finished in gold and combines giltwood and composition materials, housing the original mercury mirror plate which retains an even speckle and good clarity. Decorative elements include an arched cresting at the dome top, bead moulding, and a facing composed of overlapping leaves with berries intersecting beside a concave section. The frame rests on a flat base and incorporates its original pine back, while the side profiles show small brass screw fixings. Measuring 187 cm high by 145 cm wide, the piece is designed for placement above the mantel in a traditional living room or reception space.

Designed during the mid-19th century, an overmantel mirror was specifically proportioned to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring a flat base and an arched top framed in gilded wood or plaster moulding.

These mirrors typically feature a carved pine core faced with plaster or composition ornament, finished with gold leaf gilding over red or yellow bole, surrounding plate glass.

Authentic period examples generally display original silvered glass with minor foxing, hand-carved wooden backboards, and natural surface wear showing the underlying clay bole through the gold leaf.

Position the mirror directly above a living room fireplace to reflect natural light, or anchor it above a hallway console table to balance traditional proportions with modern decor.

Dust the delicate gold leaf frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents that can dissolve the water gilding.
