This set of six 19th-century Victorian parlour chairs is made from dark brown walnut with purple velvet upholstery. Each dining chair has a balloon back enclosing a pierced carved splat, and stands upon cabriole legs with brass stud trim bordering the seat cushions. The polished wooden frames show open scrollwork details within the crest rails, and the tight joints hold firm without visible breaks or repairs. Each chair measures 8 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. These traditional seats function well around a dining table in a formal dining room, or as occasional seating in a living room or parlour.

FAQs

Victorian balloon back chairs feature a distinctive rounded backframe shaped like a hot-air balloon, popularised during the mid-19th century in Britain. Often crafted with intricate pierced splats and cabriole or turned legs, they exemplify the ornamental design aesthetic of the Victorian era.

Fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood were predominantly used for the framework due to their strength and rich grain. Seats were traditionally stuffed with horsehair and upholstered in durable woven fabrics, damasks, or velvet.

Authentic Victorian chairs usually feature hand-carved accents, traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural patina on the timber surface. Inspecting the underside often reveals hand-sawn wood marks, natural oxidisation, and evidence of historical upholstery work.

Pairing ornate Victorian chairs with a minimalist contemporary dining table creates a clear visual contrast in a modern space. Alternatively, individual chairs can serve as accent seating in hallways, bedrooms, or office spaces to introduce historic texture.

Keep wooden frames away from direct heat sources and sunlight, applying natural beeswax polish along the grain periodically. Gently vacuum velvet upholstery with a soft brush attachment and treat spills immediately using a dry, clean cloth without rubbing.
