About This Antique Pair of Mahogany Dining Chairs

This is a fine-quality antique English pair of Victorian balloon-back dining chairs, made from solid mahogany. They date from circa 1860 and have newly upholstered seats. In addition, they are in excellent condition.

Versatile Antique Occasional Chairs:

These antique balloon back chairs are ideal as Victorian dining chairs. Alternatively, they work well as occasional chairs around the home, from bedroom chairs to hall chairs. They would even suit the home office as desk chairs.

Balloon Back Design and Elegant Legs:

The pair of Victorian dining chairs feature an attractive balloon-shaped moulded back and a carved, shaped horizontal splat. Below the seat, a moulded front rail adds further detail. Finally, the chairs stand on elegant turned, reeded and tapering front legs, with sabre legs to the rear.

Newly Upholstered Drop-In Seats:

In addition, we have newly upholstered the drop-in seats to a professional standard. For this, we chose a neutral colour, hardwearing hopsack chenille weave. We then finished the seats with a traditional hessian to the underside. As a result, the upholstery is clean and free from wear and marks.

Bespoke Upholstery Service:

However, you may not like the colour or style of the upholstery. If so, we can recover the seats in a fabric of your choice. For this service, we charge £25 labour per seat.

In summary, this antique English pair of Victorian dining chairs is in excellent overall condition. To begin with, we have cleaned and French-polished the chair frames by hand. Because the chairs keep their original patination, they boast a stunning, rich colour. Additionally, there are nominal old-use marks to the leading edges of the frames. However, this is nothing significant given their age. We have also newly upholstered the drop-in seats, with a hessian finish below. As a result, the upholstery is clean and free from wear and marks. That said, you may prefer a different colour or style. If so, we can recover the seats in your own fabric for £25 labour per seat. Overall, the chair frames are in excellent condition, solid at the joints and ready to us

This pair of Victorian dining chairs dates from 1860 and takes the classic balloon-back form. Each chair is made from solid mahogany with a French-polished, rich warm brown finish that preserves the original patination alongside nominal old-use marks on the leading edges. The construction incorporates a carved and shaped horizontal splat within the balloon frame, a moulded front rail, turned and tapering front legs, and sabre rear legs. The drop-in seats are newly upholstered in a neutral hopsack chenille weave and finished with traditional hessian underneath. Measuring 88 cm high, 45.5 cm wide, and 49.5 cm deep, these versatile chairs are suitable for everyday dining around a kitchen or dining table, as occasional seating in a hallway or bedroom, or as functional desk chairs in a home office environment.

A balloon back chair is a design originating in the 1830s and popularized throughout the Victorian era, characterized by a rounded, open back structure reminiscent of a hot-air balloon contour.

Victorian dining chairs were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut, often featuring horsehair-padded seats upholstered in leather, velvet, or woven fabrics.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, rich natural patina, heavy solid mahogany construction, turned or cabriole front legs, and subtle age-appropriate wear around frame joints.

These chairs can be integrated alongside a modern minimalist dining table or utilised individually as accent seating at a writing desk, hallway console, or dressing table.

Preserve the wood finish by applying beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources, and spot-cleaning fabric upholstery with dry foam cleaners.
