This set of four 19th-century Victorian dining chairs takes the form of balloon backs executed in rich warm brown rosewood. Each piece exhibits a carved scroll splat, fluted front legs, and individual damask upholstered seats in yellow, red, cream, and blue Sanderson Lymington Damask fabric. The timber shows a polished finish with visible grain alongside traditional joinery details on the frames. Measuring 87 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 45 cm deep with a seat height of 47 cm, the set suits placement around a dining table in an English Country House interior. The chairs offer practical seating while introducing distinct period character and colourful textile accents to a dining room setting.

FAQs

Balloon back chairs originated during the early-to-mid Victorian period, characterised by a rounded, open-hoop backframe resembling a balloon. They became a staple of 19th-century dining rooms due to their balanced proportions and lightweight, elegant design.

These chairs were crafted from solid rosewood or dark rosewood veneers over hardwood frames, featuring hand-carved details and fluted or turned legs. Seats were traditionally stuffed with horsehair and upholstered in woven fabrics such as damask, silk, or velvet.

Authentic pieces display distinct grain patterning characteristic of rosewood, along with hand-cut joinery, period-correct carved motifs, and turned front legs. Marks of hand construction on the underside of the seat frame and original mortise-and-tenon joints further indicate authenticity.

Pair these chairs with a modern minimalist dining table to create a balanced contrast of textures and eras. Alternatively, use individual chairs as accent seating in hallways, bedrooms, or alongside a writing desk.

Keep rosewood furniture away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading. Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood finish.
