This large English pier mirror dates from the 1920s and draws on an English Regency style. Constructed from giltwood and gesso with glass, the piece presents a gold finish. The vertical wall mirror features an arched cresting at the top, a bevelled glass mirror plate, and a continuous rope-twist moulding along the outer frame. Standing at 115 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 3 cm deep, the mirror includes a wood panelled back. The structure is in good condition, and the bevelled glass remains well-preserved. Positioned vertically on a narrow wall space, the mirror functions well in hallways, narrow entryways, or compact living areas to reflect light and expand the sense of space. The reflective surface and narrow proportions allow it to hang between architectural features, windows, or doors while maintaining a grand Regency aesthetic within a contemporary home interior.

Pier mirrors were traditionally designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to fit on the wall spaceknown as the pierbetween windows or above a console table. Their primary purpose was to reflect natural light into room interiors and create an illusion of increased space and depth.

Traditional English pier mirrors typically feature hand-carved timber frameworks coated with gesso, followed by hand-applied gold leaf gilding. The mirror plates were made with mercury-silvered or leaded glass, frequently featuring bevelled edges around the perimeter.

Authentic period gilt mirrors usually demonstrate natural oxidisation, dark spotting (foxing) on the glass silvering, and subtle wear to the gold leaf that reveals the reddish bole clay underneath. Examining the back reveals hand-sawn timber panels, original fixings, and age-related wood shrinkage.

A tall gilt pier mirror works effectively positioned in a narrow hallway, between two tall windows, or leaned securely against a feature wall to enhance light. It adds classical architectural scale and warmth when contrasted against contemporary neutral paint palettes.

Avoid liquid cleaners or commercial sprays on the gilt framework, as moisture can dissolve original gesso or lift delicate gold leaf. Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and clean the glass plate carefully with a damp cloth without touching the gilded wood.
