This Victorian wall mirror dates from the nineteenth century and reflects a French Chateau style. The rectangular piece is constructed from wood and gesso with a gold giltwood finish, housing an original glass plate with significant foxing, dark spots, and pitting visible across the surface. The frame displays elaborate ornamentation, including prominent acanthus leaf corner flourishes, layered foliate relief moulding around the perimeter, and a delicate beaded inner border framing the glass. Measuring 94 cm high by 70 cm wide and 2 cm deep, this mirror is suited for placement above a mantelpiece in a living room, hallway, or bedroom setting.

FAQs

A 19th-century giltwood and gesso mirror features a wooden frame coated with gesso plaster, detailed with carved or moulded ornament, and overlaid with thin sheets of gold leaf.

Craftsmen applied a mixture of chalk and glue known as gesso over a carved wooden core, allowing intricate relief details to be sculpted before applying gold leaf using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces often show natural age-related wear, subtle cracking in the gesso, a dark red or clay bole underlayer showing through worn gold leaf, and authentic foxing on the glass plate.

Positioning an antique gilt mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace creates a compelling contrast between historic ornamentation and clean modern lines while enhancing ambient light.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or commercial cleaners that can dissolve the delicate gold leaf or damage the underlying water-soluble gesso.
