This large Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1880 and possesses an archtop frame constructed from giltwood and gesso with a gold finish. The piece showcases a heavily carved floral cresting at the top, a moulded rim around the glass, and scrolled feet at the base. Additional visible details include the original glass with foxing, and a wood panelled back. The mirror measures 149 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. Positioned in an English Country House style interior, this mirror is intended for placement above the mantel in a reception room or living space. It reflects interior light while adding period character to traditional or eclectic fireplace settings.

Victorian overmantel mirrors were designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring wide arched frames often embellished with carved foliage crestings and gilded finishes to maximize light reflection within living spaces.

These frames were typically constructed from carved timber or lime wood with applied gesso moulding, covered in clay bole and finished with hand-applied gold leaf that was burnished to achieve depth.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature original panelled wooden backings, slight foxing or oxidisation on the glass plate, and natural surface wear where the underlying reddish clay bole shows through rubbed gilding.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or atop a console table to create an architectural focal point that adds formal proportions and light to both classic and contemporary rooms.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, keeping moisture and liquid cleaning agents away from the delicate gesso and gold leaf surface.
