This pair of French Second Empire armchairs dates from the 19th century. Each open armchair has a painted wood frame finished in turquoise with gold leaf gilding, set off by emerald green velvet upholstery with braid trim. The details include carved acanthus leaves, turned legs, open armrests, and gilded accents along the mouldings. The chairs stand on turned front legs and feature elaborate carved crests at the top of the backrests. Measuring 109 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 62 cm deep, with a seat height of 44 cm, these armchairs provide comfortable seating in a living room, study, or bedroom. Their bright palette and gilded woodwork suit formal reception spaces or eclectic modern interiors seeking a bold statement.

A fauteuil is an open-sided armchair featuring an upholstered backrest and seat alongside open wooden armrests, a design originating in 17th-century France that remained prominent throughout the 19th century.

These chairs were typically constructed using hardwoods such as beech or walnut, finished with gesso layerings, painted surfaces, and gold leaf gilding, before being upholstered in velvet, silk, or damask.

Authentic period pieces showcase hand-carved wooden joinery, traditional mortise and tenon construction, subtle wear along painted or gilded highlights, and evidence of traditional upholstery materials such as horsehair and webbing.

Positioning a pair of French armchairs opposite a contemporary sofa or flanking a fireplace creates symmetry while introducing historical contrast to modern living spaces.

Dust frame surfaces gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid placing timber near direct heat or sunlight to prevent cracking, and vacuum velvet upholstery using a soft brush attachment.
