This large late nineteenth-century French Regence style open armchair has a giltwood frame with scrolling arms and cabriole legs. The carved frame includes a shell motif on the front rail and detailed foliage along the crest and seat edge. Both the back and seat are upholstered in a cream and bluish grey tapestry panel featuring bouquets of pink and red chrysanthemums, finished with rows of brass stud trimming. The distressed gold finish shows natural ageing and surface wear across the wooden structure. Measuring 114 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 58 cm deep, this seating piece stands well in a principal reception room, drawing room, or reading study alongside traditional or classic interior furnishings.

Originating in early eighteenth-century France during the Regency of Philippe dOrleans, this style marks the transition from grand Baroque symmetry to lighter Rococo curves. Key characteristics include gentle cabriole legs, subtle shell carvings, and exposed wooden frames with upholstered seat panels.

These armchairs are typically constructed from carved hardwoods such as beech or walnut, often finished with water gilding or paint. Upholstery traditionally features hand-woven wool or silk tapestries, needlepoint panels, or rich velvet secured with decorative brass studs.

Authentic revival pieces demonstrate hand-carved detailing with subtle variations, a layered gesso ground beneath gilding, and signs of genuine age such as light wear to high points. Upholstery may show hand-stitched needlepoint backing and appropriate natural wear on structural joinery.

A carved giltwood armchair functions well as a statement accent piece in contemporary rooms. Placing it against a neutral backdrop, beside a modern minimalist side table, or within a formal drawing room allows the detailed carving and tapestry texture to stand out.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can damage the gesso and gold leaf. Tapestry upholstery should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading and gently vacuumed using a soft brush attachment.
