Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French open armchair, traditionally known as a fauteuil, features exposed wooden arm supports with padded manchettes and an open space between the arms and backrest. Popularised during the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods, these seats showcase hand-carved frame detailing and gold-leaf finishing.

Frames were typically carved from dense hardwoods such as beech or oak, then layered with gesso and water-gilded or oil-gilded using thin sheets of gold leaf. Upholstery traditionally incorporated natural webbing, horsehair stuffing, and hand-stitched decorative fabrics.

Look for structural markers such as carved timber joinery, natural wear exposing red bole beneath layers of gold leaf, and straight fluted legs typical of Neoclassical design. Period gilding displays subtle patination and minor rubbing rather than a uniform modern metallic paint finish.

Position the carved giltwood frame against neutral or minimalist backdrops to create a focal accent. Pairing classical gilded frames with contemporary geometric or textured upholstery bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern interior schemes.

Dust the giltwood surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding damp cloths or liquid cleaners that dissolve water gesso or strip gold leaf. Keep the chair positioned away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
