Louis XVI seating is defined by a return to neoclassical symmetry, straight lines, and classical motifs. Common features include oval or rectangular backrests, stop-fluted tapered legs, and carved mouldings inspired by Greco-Roman architecture.

Frames were typically carved from hardwoods such as beech or walnut before being prepared with gesso and layered with gold leaf. Upholstery originally consisted of natural materials including horsehair stuffing, jute webbing, and silk, damask, or tapestry fabrics.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, peg construction, and natural wear to the gilded gesso surface. The underside of the frame often displays tool marks, oxidised timber, and traditional upholstery tacking rather than modern staples or machine-made screws.

Place a pair of French armchairs opposite a contemporary sofa to create visual balance through contrasting textures and eras. Pairing ornate gilded frames with neutral walls or minimalist architectural elements allows the intricate craftsmanship to stand out.

Giltwood frames should be cleaned gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or brush, avoiding water or chemical cleansers that dissolve gold leaf or gesso. Fabric upholstery requires light vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and immediate spot-cleaning using dry cleaning methods for liquid spills.
