This nineteenth-century style French Louis XVI open armchair has a pale green painted wooden frame complemented by a matching pale green glaze on the turned, fluted legs. The piece is upholstered in petit point tapestry panels featuring figural and floral motifs in tones of pink, green, brown, and cream, set against a striped background. Additional visual details include carved rosette motifs on the arm supports, curved open arms, and an oval backrest. The armchair stands 97 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, with a seat height of 46 cm. In a modern interior, the chair serves as an accent seat in a living room, bedroom, or study.

Originating in late 18th-century France, Louis XVI armchairs, or fauteuils, are defined by neoclassical symmetry, geometric frames, turned or fluted straight legs, and open armrests. They frequently feature oval or rectangular padded backrests and upholstered seats framed in carved beechwood or walnut.

Frames were typically carved from native hardwoods such as beech, walnut, or oak, which were often painted or gilt. Upholstery utilised natural materials including horsehair and wool padding, covered with hand-woven wool or silk tapestries, petit point needlework, or damask fabrics.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carved joinery, peg construction at the frame joints, and hand-stitched tapestry or needlepoint work. Frames may show natural surface wear, minor shrinkage marks along wood grain lines, and original paint layering or patination.

A period fauteuil serves as a focal accent piece when placed in a bedroom, dressing space, or reading corner. Pairing structured classical framework with understated modern side tables or neutral wall backdrops highlights the textured detailed embroidery without overwhelming the room.

Tapestry textile panels require gentle maintenance using a low-suction vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft brush attachment. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent fading and fiber degradation, consulting professional textile conservators for cleaning.
