A Louis Xv Provincial Armchair

18th century
Description

A Louis XV period fauteuil in walnut, the shaped backrest with lightly arched toprail and incorporating a cabriolet shape upholstered in a floral patterned brocade, with padded arms with leaf carved supports over a stuffover seat on a shaped seatrail and raised on cabriole legs with carved feet. French provincial, probably south of France, circa 1760.

Condition: Overall very good, the chair is in very good condition with no damage or repairs to the frame, it is solid and robust and comfortable to sit on, the fabric, which is not new, is in good condition with a couple of small marks, otherwise it is in good condition with no tears. Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Louis XV Provincial armchair, often termed a fauteuil, is defined by its curving lines, cabriole legs, open armrests with padded manchettes, and Rococo-inspired hand-carved floral motifs. Originating in 18th-century France, provincial versions adapted courtly Parisian styles using local timber for regional homes.

These armchairs were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, beech, or fruitwood, framed with mortise and tenon joinery. Upholstery traditionally incorporated natural materials including horsehair, webbing, and hessian, finished with woven tapestry or damask fabrics.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved details with slight asymmetrical variations, hand-cut mortise joinery, and naturally aged wood displaying a developed patina. The absence of uniform mechanical cuts or modern fasteners further distinguishes period construction from reproduction pieces.

Position the armchair as an accent piece in a contemporary living room, study, or bedroom to create textural contrast. Pairing detailed woodwork and patterned fabric with neutral surrounds allows the historical silhouette to serve as a focal point.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and intense sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading. Clean the wooden frame gently with a soft cloth and apply beeswax sparingly, while vacuuming the tapestry upholstery using a low-suction brush attachment.
