This French open armchair from the 19th century reflects the Louis XVI style and stands 97 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, with a seat height of 46 cm. The wooden frame has a pale green painted finish and incorporates an oval backrest, scroll-shaped armrests, and fluted legs with turned elements. The upholstery comprises wool tapestry panels featuring petit point needlework, displaying a central figural scene on the backrest and a floral basket design on the seat, bordered by brass studs along the edges. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a seating option in a living room, bedroom, or study. The construction combines painted timber components with textile elements, maintaining a classical silhouette associated with French chateau decor. The needlepoint panels exhibit traditional decorative motifs while the frame retains its light green coloration and carved structural details.

Originating in France during the late eighteenth century, Louis XVI chairs are characterised by neoclassically inspired straight lines, fluted tapering legs, and geometric framing such as oval or rectangular backs.

Frames were typically carved from beech or walnut, often finished with paint or gilding, while upholstery utilised hand-woven wool needlepoint, petit point, or silk damask textiles secured with brass studs.

Authentic pieces feature pegged mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved detailing with subtle irregularities, original webbed upholstery construction beneath the seat, and natural wear on paint or wood finishes.

An upholstered French armchair serves as an accent piece alongside contemporary minimalist furniture, positioned in a quiet reading corner or paired with a neutral sofa to introduce texture and historical context.

Keep the upholstery out of direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation and fading, vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment, and clean the painted wooden frame using a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth.
