Description

A beautiful antique French carved gilt wood armchair, dating from around the 1860-1880 period.

This is of very good quality, with gorgeous carving throughout. It sits on turned and fluted legs, with acanthus leaf carving and scrolled armrests. The proportions are very generous and this is very comfortable.

The gilt finish has just the right amount of wear, the frame is solid and perfectly distressed with a lovely patina. We have just had this re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French period armchairs, such as those from the Louis XIV to Louis XVI eras, are characterised by graceful curves, classical motifs, and sophisticated proportions that reflect royal court aesthetics.

These pieces typically feature solid hardwood frames, such as beech or oak, embellished with hand-carved details and finished with water or oil gilding using genuine gold leaf.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-carved tool marks, traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon, natural wear to the gold leaf revealing the red bole underneath, and period-appropriate upholstery techniques.

Pairing a highly ornate historical chair with minimalist contemporary surroundings creates a striking contrast that highlights the craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Giltwood requires delicate maintenance, including dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight, moisture, and chemical cleaning agents to protect the fragile gold leaf finish.
