During the Georgian period, tea was an expensive commodity, necessitating secure, lockable containers known as caddies to store the dry leaves safely.

These pieces were typically constructed from imported tropical hardwoods like mahogany, featuring finely crafted dovetail joints, veneer panels, and delicate wood or bone inlay.

Authentic items feature period-correct construction such as hand-cut dovetailing, aged patina on the wood, genuine hand-cut veneer, and traditional brass escutcheons.

Placement on a sideboard or console table allows the piece to function as an objet dart while providing discreet tabletop storage.

Preservation involves keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying occasional microcrystalline wax, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
