Early Victorian Sarcophagus Shaped Tea Caddy with Mixing Bowl & Key

19th century
Description

A very appealing early Victorian, sarcophagus-shaped mahogany tea caddy with a cut-glass mixing bowl, the original brass lock, and an old key which has been adapted to work, circa 1840.

The top opens to reveal the central mixing bowl, which is interestingly shaped. On each side is a lidded compartment for tea. The lids of these can be lifted off, each having a small turned bone knob. The inside of the top is lined with waxed marbled paper. It stands on four small brass feet.

Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. The mixing bowl is in great condition with no cracks or chips. Overall, in excellent condition.

Aftercare:

Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. Periodically wipe over

with a soft cloth. Occasionally, use a spray furniture polish containing beeswax to maintain

its satin sheen. Please don't use a silicone spray as this could have a detrimental effect on the

waxed surface.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

This early Victorian sarcophagus-shaped tea caddy is made from mahogany in a warm brown colour, complemented by brass, glass, and paper materials. The piece measures 17 cm high, 36.6 cm wide, and 15.6 cm deep. The design includes four small brass feet, a brass lock with an adapted key attached to a golden tassel, two internal lidded compartments fitted with small turned bone knobs, and a central cut-glass mixing bowl. The interior lid features a green and pink waxed marbled paper lining. In a contemporary home, this item serves as a decorative storage box placed on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or living space. It is cleaned, re-waxed, and polished to a satin sheen, presenting an excellent condition overall with no cracks or chips on the glass mixing bowl.

A sarcophagus tea caddy is a wooden storage box for tea leaves, characterised by a tapered rectangular shape and flared lid resembling classical ancient sarcophagi, popularised during the Regency and early Victorian eras.

Victorian tea caddies were typically constructed from woods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often fitted with brass hardware, zinc or foil linings for tea preservation, and hand-cut glass mixing bowls.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate lock mechanisms, natural wood oxidisation inside unpolished areas, and original linings such as lead foil or marbled paper.

An antique tea caddy functions well on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf, serving either as a decorative accent or as practical storage for small keepsakes and trinkets.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking.
