William IV Sarcophagus Shaped Tea Caddy with Mixing Bowl & Key, Circa 1835

19th century
Description

A high-quality William IV solid rosewood sarcophagus-shaped tea caddy, featuring a blown-glass mixing bowl and the original lock with an old key that has been adapted to work

The quality of the rosewood is exceptional in terms of its colour and grain pattern. The key unlocks with a reassuring click, and it has a mother-of-pearl escutcheon. The glass mixing bowl sits within its own reservoir with the removable dome-topped tea casters on either side. The beautifully shaped brass hinged lids are constructed from rosewood, matching the interior of the main lid. The mixing bowl is in excellent condition, without any cracks or chips. It possesses a tuned wooden carrying handle at either end and sits on four wooden bun feet. The base is lined with waxed marbled paper.

Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. It is in terrific overall condition.

Aftercare:

Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. Periodically wipe over

with a soft cloth. Occasionally, use a spray furniture polish containing beeswax to maintain

its satin sheen. Please don't use a silicone spray as this could have a detrimental effect on the

waxed surface.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

This William IV sarcophagus-shaped tea caddy dates from the nineteenth century and uses solid dark brown rosewood, clear glass, brass, and purple fabric lining. The hinged lid opens to reveal a central blown-glass mixing bowl flanked by two removable dome-topped tea canisters with brass hinges, all resting on four wooden bun feet with turned wooden ring carrying handles at the sides and a brass escutcheon with a key and tassel. The exterior has a polished finish showing natural grain patterns in the wood. Measuring 17.5 cm high, 35 cm wide, and 16 cm deep, this lidded container sits suitably on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or a traditional living room for display or practical storage.

A sarcophagus tea caddy is a 19th-century wooden tea box characterised by sloped sides and a tapered lid, reflecting the influence of ancient Egyptian and classical form design popularised during the Regency and William IV periods.

William IV tea caddies were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, featuring interior foil linings, cut-glass mixing bowls, and brass or bone escutcheons.

Authentic 1830s tea caddies generally feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, natural patination on original wood surfaces, brass lock mechanisms, and internal sectioning built to hold loose tea and glass blending bowls.

Display the piece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or shelving unit as an accent object to introduce historic timber textures into modern or traditional room schemes.

Keep the tea caddy in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping, and clean gently with beeswax polish applied with a soft lint-free cloth.
