Introduction

Antique Patch Boxes

Patch boxes were made from the later 17th century onward to hold the small fabric patches applied to the face, a habit at its height through the 18th century. Small enough for a pocket or a reticule, they were often fitted with a mirror inside the lid and frequently carry a motto or a souvenir inscription.

On Sellingantiques the box you meet most often is enamel on copper from the Bilston and South Staffordshire workshops: coloured glass fused over a shaped copper body, oval or rectangular, with a hinged lid. The word enamel appears in over half of all titles and Bilston in nearly half, and the date repeatedly given for them is circa 1770 to 1780.

Dating follows suit. Thirty-two listings sit under the broad bracket 18th Century and thirteen under Georgian, with only a handful reaching into the 19th century or later. Few carry a clean year, though titles often narrow it themselves to circa 1780 or c. 1770.

One title in five sells the box as a snuff box as well, and several are simply headed Patch / Snuff Box. Beyond the enamels there is a steady minority in other materials: turned treen and Tunbridge ware, tortoiseshell, silver, papier mâché, coquilla nut and ceramic, with scattered Continental and Asian pieces.

What sets them apart

Where The Range Splits

Material sets the outer limits. Turned box wood and rosewood treen, and the Tunbridge ware pill and patch boxes dated around c1840 to c1880, sit at the bottom of the range. A Georgian 18 carat gold and agate box and a silver box with a miniature sit near the top, well clear of the enamels.

Within the enamels, what is painted on the lid does the work. Boxes naming a spa or place, Cheltenham Wells and Buxton among them, and motto boxes such as The Happy Union, sit above the plain ones. So do the boxes with a subject worth describing: an American ship, a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, musicians in parkland, a gingham ground.

Shape counts too. Oval is the default, so heart-shaped, navette-shaped and rectangular boxes get singled out in titles, and rectangular Bilston boxes recur high in the range. Identified Continental and Asian pieces, including Chinese Beijing enamel and Dutch Delft, also appear at the upper end, one at a time rather than in runs.

The Antique Patch Boxes Glossary

Patch box
A small lidded box for the fabric beauty patches worn on the face in the 18th century.
Bilston
The South Staffordshire town whose workshops produced most of the enamel-on-copper boxes seen in this category; South Staffordshire enamel is the wider regional description for the same class.
Enamel on copper
Coloured glass fused over a shaped copper body, the standard construction of the dominant type.
Motto box
A box carrying an inscription such as Keep This For My Sake or A Token of Esteem. Mirrored means a small mirror set inside the lid, noted in a few titles.
Navette
A pointed-oval, boat-shaped outline. One box is titled navette-shaped; bonbonnière, a small sweetmeat box of the same enamel family, appears once as well.
Treen
Small turned or carved woodwork, used here for wooden patch and pill boxes, alongside Tunbridge ware from the Tunbridge Wells trade and the turned coquilla palm nut.
Questions people ask

Antique Patch Boxes: Frequently Asked Questions

How many patch boxes come up in a year?

Around eleven come to market on Sellingantiques in a year, and 26 different dealers have listed one, so no single dealer holds the field.

That makes it a small category with a wide spread of sources, and the unusual shapes and materials tend to appear singly rather than in runs.

Why are so many listed as snuff boxes too?

One title in five sells the box as a snuff box as well as a patch box, and several are headed Patch / Snuff Box outright.

The objects are the same size and construction, so dealers describe them by both uses. The double naming is more common among the boxes currently for sale than in the older archive.

What date are Bilston enamel patch boxes given?

The recurring date in titles is circa 1770 to 1780, sometimes written c. 1770 or circa 1780.

Most listings across the category use a broad bracket instead: 18th Century on 32 of them, Georgian on 13, with only eight carrying a clean year.

Are patch boxes always enamel?

No. Enamel dominates, appearing in over half of all titles, but a steady minority use other materials: turned treen, Tunbridge ware, tortoiseshell, silver, papier mâché, coquilla nut and ceramic.

The wooden boxes tend to be later, dated around c1840 to c1880, and sit at the bottom of the range.

Do any come from outside Britain?

A few. Japanese cloisonné dated around 1900, Chinese coromandel and ivory, a Chinese Beijing enamel, a French white metal box with tortoiseshell lining and a Dutch Delft box all turn up.

They arrive as scattered singles, and the Beijing enamel snuff box sits alone at the very top of the range.

What is the oldest patch box recorded?

A Dutch Delft snuff and patch box catalogued as before 1700, the only 17th-century piece in the archive.

One other listing carries a 17th Century date field but is titled as an 18th-century silver box, so field and title do not always agree.
