Introduction

Antique Lap Desks

The portable writing box grew up in the 18th century as a way of carrying pen, ink, paper and documents while travelling, and by the 19th century it was a standard personal possession for officers, colonial administrators, clerks and letter-writing households. The lid opens flat or into a slope, so the box works wherever you set it down.

On Sellingantiques the same object is listed under three headings. "Writing slope" carries 93 titles, "writing box" 40, and "lap desk" the rest, with the word "writing" doing service in the large majority of titles. Reading across all three gets you the whole category.

The single most likely encounter is a Victorian hardwood slope with brass mounts. Victorian appears in 58 titles, and the timbers cluster on walnut, rosewood and mahogany, with burr walnut behind them. Brass turns up in 39 titles, 21 of them specifically brass bound. One box in fourteen declares secret drawers in the title.

Around it sit four recurring groups: campaign and military boxes, at 31 titles about one in five; brass-bound and brass-inlaid work, overlapping the rest; colonial and Anglo-Indian or Ceylonese boxes in ebony, camphor wood and Vizagapatam work; and a small steady slice of decorative finishes, from papier-mâché to Tunbridge ware mosaic. Dating is often broad, with Victorian and the unspecific "19th Century" covering the majority and only 42 of 162 listings committing to a clean year.

What sets them apart

Top And Bottom

Timber does most of the sorting. Plain walnut and mahogany slopes sit at the bottom of the sampled range, while burr, figured, coromandel and ebony examples sit high. Brass follows the same pattern with a twist: brass binding appears at every level, but brass let flush into the timber as inlay, or laid over it as overlay, clusters in the upper part.

Interiors and size push a box further. Fitted interiors with concealed drawers rank above simple ones, and a handful pair secret drawers with a named patent lock and a working key. Format counts too, since table-top, bi-fold and metamorphic boxes that unfold into a working desk sit at the very top, above the small lap examples that anchor the bottom.

Applied decoration is the other route upward. Hand-painted papier-mâché, Tunbridge ware, pietra dura panels, mother-of-pearl and abalone inlay, embossed leather and Japanese lacquer all appear only in the upper part of the range, whatever the box beneath them is made of.

Questions people ask

Antique Lap Desks: Frequently Asked Questions

Is a writing slope the same as a lap desk?

Yes, in practice. The three headings used on Sellingantiques, writing slope, writing box and lap desk, describe the same hinged box with a sloping writing surface.

Slope dominates, with 93 titles against 40 for writing box. Lap desk emphasises portability and use on the knee.

What timbers were used for these boxes?

Walnut leads with 36 titles, then rosewood at 33 and mahogany at 20. Burr walnut accounts for a further group, and coromandel and ebony turn up throughout.

Colonial timber runs deep. Ebony boxes attributed to Ceylon, Sri Lanka and Anglo-Indian workshops appear repeatedly, alongside camphor wood, Vizagapatam work with antler, and a Chinese rosewood example.

How old are most examples?

The dated field spans 1800 to 1920 and leans hard on the 19th century. Victorian carries 45 listings and the broad label "19th Century" another 40, with Regency and Georgian behind them.

Only 42 of the 162 listings give a clean year. Where they do, the decades bunch at mid-century, the 1850s and 1860s in particular. Nothing in the evidence reaches back into the 18th century.

What does a campaign writing box mean?

Campaign appears in 31 titles, about one in five. It covers boxes made or styled for military and travelling use, often with recessed handles and metal reinforcement to survive the journey.

Sample titles include officers' campaign slopes, a brass-mounted William IV lap desk, an Anglo-Indian campaign writing box and a metamorphic camphor campaign slope that unfolds into a desk.

Do these boxes really have secret drawers?

Dealers declare them in the title of one box in fourteen, so 12 titles out of 162. The phrase covers concealed drawers or compartments within the fitted interior.

A handful go further and pair the secret drawers with a named patent lock and a working key. Fitted, complex interiors sit higher in the range than simple ones.

Which decorative finishes turn up on them?

Hand-painted papier-mâché, Tunbridge ware mosaic, pietra dura panels, mother-of-pearl and abalone inlay, marquetry and parquetry, Killarney inlay, Japanese lacquer and embossed leather all appear.

Irish work features more than a small population would suggest, with Killarney inlay, Belfast ash and Dublin-made walnut boxes. Every one of the decorative finishes sits in the upper part of the range.
