This Victorian writing slope is formed in rich brown rosewood with veneered wood grain and polished brass trim. The rectangular box measures 16.5 cm high, 35 cm wide, and 26.6 cm deep, featuring brass-bound edges along the lid perimeter, an inlaid central brass cartouche plate, and a matching brass keyhole escutcheon fitted with a Bramah lock and an original key adorned with a small white tassel. The timber displays strong natural figuring throughout the surfaces. Placed upon a home office desk, study table, or library display surface, it provides a functional storage compartment for correspondence, stationery, and small personal documents while serving as a decorative antique accent piece in a traditional interior setting.

A Victorian writing slope is a portable wooden box designed with an angled interior writing surface that opens flat. Popular during the nineteenth century, these boxes allowed individuals to write correspondence while travelling and typically contained fitted sections for inkwells, pens, and paper.

Writing slopes were commonly built using solid hard woods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often adorned with brass edging, protective corner bindings, and decorative brass cartouches. Interior surfaces were typically lined with velvet or skiver leather.

Authentic pieces generally display period-correct joinery, natural timber patination, and period mechanisms such as Bramah locks. They frequently include hidden spring-loaded drawers activated by concealed catches within the inkwell or pen compartments.

A writing slope functions as a refined accent piece when displayed closed on an executive office desk, console table, or library bookshelf. It can also be displayed open to show the interior writing leather and fitted compartments.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent cracking or warping of the veneer. Clean the wood using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the patinated surface.
