Antique Early Victorian Coromandel & Brass Writing Slope Box

19th century
Description

An early Victorian writing slope box, crafted from coromandel, a rare and highly prized exotic hardwood, and decorated with brass inlay and inset carrying handles.

The box includes a concealed side drawer, which can only be opened once the lid is raised and an internal retaining pin is released. This discreet locking arrangement adds an additional level of security to the fitted interior.

Inside, the writing surface is lined in black leather with gilt-tooled decoration. The interior is fitted with inkwells, a pen tray and small lidded compartments, together with a shield-shaped escutcheon.

The upper section of the leather writing slope lifts to reveal a storage compartment beneath. Within the fitted writing section is a further concealed mechanism: when one of the internal dividers is withdrawn, a sprung compartment is released, revealing three hidden drawers.

The lower section of the writing slope also opens to provide an additional storage compartment.

A particularly well-fitted example, combining practical writing facilities with multiple concealed compartments and hidden drawers.

This early Victorian writing slope box belongs to the 19th-century period and follows a gentleman's library style. The rectangular piece is constructed from dark brown coromandel wood, accented with a polished finish and contrasting polished brass hardware, including corner plates, vertical straps, flush carrying handles, and an inlaid top escutcheon. Additional visible details comprise a keyhole lock on the front and mitred joints on the brass strapping. Measuring 19.5 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 29 cm deep, the box fits neatly onto an office desk or study table. Inside, the fitted workspace provides designated compartments for writing instruments and correspondence. Owners use this piece in a home office or study to organise stationery while adding traditional character to a workspace. The portable design allows it to sit on a tabletop or desk surface during daily administrative tasks, serving as a functional storage accessory for pens, paper, and letters.

A writing slope is a portable wooden box designed with a hinged lid that opens into an angled writing surface, incorporating internal compartments for inkwells, quill pens, and letter paper.

Victorian writing slopes were commonly constructed from dense exotic timbers such as coromandel, rosewood, and mahogany, reinforced with brass strapwork, corner brackets, and flush side handles.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature distinct dark striped timber grain, hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass bindings, and original internal lock mechanisms or velvet-lined writing surfaces.

A writing slope can be positioned closed as a decorative accent on an office desk, styled atop a sideboard, or placed within a styled bookcase arrangement.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources to prevent warping, apply a microcrystalline wax polish periodically, and wipe the brass fittings with a dry lint-free cloth.
