This Victorian writing slope is made from warm brown walnut with brass binding, an inlaid brass central cartouche, and flush corner straps. The rectangular box has a working lock and a key inserted into the brass keyhole escutcheon, plus fine brass line inlay around the lid and front panel. Measuring 17.8 cm high, 40.5 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, it is sized for placement on a desk in a study, library, or home office. The hinged lid opens to reveal a black tooled leather skiver, storage space for two inkwells, and a removable pen tray with a nib holder. A spring-loaded concealed panel opens to reveal two secret drawers. The exterior shows the natural grain patterns of the timber alongside polished brass mounts.

A Victorian writing slope is a portable wooden box designed to unfold into an inclined surface for writing, popular during the 19th century. These boxes contained dedicated compartments for inkwells, pens, paper, and correspondence, enabling individuals to write while travelling or away from a desk.

Victorian writing slopes were typically constructed from solid hardwoods and decorative veneers such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. They frequently feature reinforced brass corners, brass binding straps, fitted internal dividers, and leather or velvet writing surfaces.

Authentic period writing slopes feature hand-cut dovetail joints, flush-fitted brass hardware designed to withstand transit, and natural oxidisation on original metal components. High-grade Victorian examples often include lockable mechanisms and concealed compartments accessed via spring-loaded wooden panels.

An antique writing slope can be displayed flat or resting partially open on an office desk, console table, or bookshelf. Combining the wood and brass vessel with modern stationery, leather-bound books, or metallic desk ornaments creates a layered interior display.

To preserve the timber finish, keep the box away from direct heat sources and moisture to prevent the wood from warping or splitting. Clean surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a specialized beeswax polish periodically, taking care not to rub harsh brass polish onto the surrounding woodwork.
