This 19th-century Anglo Indian campaign writing box is made from warm brown camphorwood with brass hardware, including protective corner strapping and a flush central plaque. The exterior displays a ribbed tambour top section and geometric line inlay. As the drawer opens, the tambour top rolls back simultaneously, revealing a rising section with pigeon holes and compartments, while the sloping fall opens to a fitted interior with a fold-out hinged writing slope with baize lining, pen tray, lidded and open compartments, and secret drawers. The piece measures 31 cm high, 45.5 cm wide, and 35 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this writing box sits on an office desk or library table to serve as a functional workstation and storage chest for stationery, letters, and small accessories. The solid wood construction and robust brass reinforcement allow it to function as a compact tabletop desk for daily administrative tasks or writing correspondence. The portable size lets it move between rooms while providing an organized workspace reminiscent of historic campaign furniture.

Campaign writing boxes were portable writing slopes manufactured in India during the nineteenth century, designed for military officers and civil servants requiring durable, transportable workstations with integrated storage.

These pieces were constructed primarily from native teak or aromatic camphorwood, reinforced with flush brass corner brackets, brass strapping, and recessed iron or brass handles to withstand travel.

Authentic examples feature brass mounts screwed flush into the timber, hand-cut dovetail joinery, integrated side carrying handles, and naturally aromatic camphorwood interiors designed to deter insects.

A writing box can be positioned atop an office desk, console table, or sideboard to serve as both decorative historical interest and functional storage for stationery.

Maintain the timber by applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain, keep the object away from direct heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and buff metal fittings gently with a soft dry cloth.
